Training Log January

Last year I ran every day in January. Lets see how far I get this time.

Day:25 Back to Saturday and 6 days left to go the pace is there in the legs but the power isnt. Plus its colder now than it was earlier in January.

Day:24 Cycle to work, cycle home and recovery run. How tired are my legs ? Answer VERY. But look at the pace....The strength is there it just feels like it isnt.

Day:23 Niall is back and so are the sprints so it was just unfortunate that my Garmin wasn't charged. Same route as last time I ran like hell today and had no record of it......Bugger

Day:22 Its funny how some days my legs feel heavy and useless and other days, like today they are back to their bouncy selves..... but for how long ?

Day:21 I'm sticking with the cycling when possible but it does mean that the running every day is becoming a bit of a challenge.

Day:20 Cycle to work, cycle home and recovery run (I knew this route would be back sooner rather than later)

Day:19 It was a pretty nice day today and yesterdays run with pup went well so I decided to take him with me for my planned hour run. The town of Linlithgow is a fantastic place to run around and the weather this time in January just makes it better. 1 hour out with the pup and everything felt fine.

Day:18 Its a Saturday and I want to run with my pup. I like finding different places to run and this place is fantastic. A nice mix between a steady flat start and an undulating trail finish. It was a bit chilly though.

Day:17 Another Friday another steady and uneventful  run. Everything is holding up. Legs are tired but not too sore. Plus I have to cycle home.

Day:16 There are days that I need to remember what I am doing and what the goal is for January. That goal is run every day. It should not matter how far or how long. It is just about achieving the goal of running every day. But as you can probably guess I have a mileage figure in mind. Doing this run today I have a feeling that it will start to feature a bit more heavily towards the end of the month.

Day:15 I had cycled to work in the morning so I just wanted an easy run at lunchtime. Unfortunately the sprint the day before had taken its toll on my legs. Hence the slow pace.

Day:14 The company accountant Niall is a very competitive chap and he is gradually building up his run fitness. We are about the same age and sometimes when we run our egos get an airing. I have never been a sprinter. I can go long but cant go fast. Today's run was Nialls idea. It was basically a sprint.

Day:13 I am lucky because there are a number of different running routes that I can take from my work place. We also have changing facilities available so lunch time runs are easy to do. ALso I have a couple of friends who like to join me from time to time. We all have different abilities and it is nice to get out and run with company.

Day:12 It was time for another trail run so I decided to take Kai my Springer with me. He loves being out and I was hoping that it would be great motivation for me. However it is a little difficult running with him especially when he is attached via his harness and running leash. But there was something else making this run worse. It felt at the start as if a stone was in my shoe and no amount to toe tapping a foot shuffling was dislodging what felt like a stone in the ball of my foot. I stopped a couple of times but could find nothing. Eventually the pain become unbearable. I had to stop and take out the insole of the shoe. Eventually I found a shard of metal that was sticking through the bottom of the shoe. It was about the depth of the sole so only appeared when the sole was compressed. Unfortunately it had already punctured the ball of my foot. However I decided to continue and enjoy the run with Kai.

Day:11 Tired, tired, tired. This is what I knew was going to happen. This is where this undertaking was going to test more than just my running ability. This is the banker stuff. This is the times that I will call upon if I get the chance to race this year. This is the slowest that I have ever run this route. Having said that it was pitch black and very icy.

Day 10: ITS FRIDAY !!!! I'm trying to convince myself that it will all start to get easier next week. The cycle in and the cycle home was the worst. I don't think that I can get much more tired at this stage.

Day 9: After the 10k yesterday and the prospect of a cycle home I decided to keep my run down to a minimum. But.....there are times that I do myself no favors. The short run turned into a very quick run. Stupidly.

Day 8: Now,  sometimes I have to travel with work and this is going to have be something that I have to contend with. So, today was about finding time to fit my run in. It wasn't going to be easy because I had about 7 hours in the driving seat and a very early start on the road.  So it was a very grumpy buy that finally made it out for a run at 8pm.Having said that I did make it a 10k.

Day 7:  Today was cycle one way and run ....easy. I was feeling it from the day before. Its interesting how the fatigue is starting to build up. The legs are feeling a bit rough but I suppose at this stage its to be expected. 17.5 miles covered for the day

Day 6: Its Monday and I'm back to work and this year it mean that I am cycling too. Its gonna be tough because not only have I embarked on my goal of running every day in January but last year when I did it it was without the added challenge of cycling. Its 13 miles each way on a slightly hilly route so there is 26 miles before I have even considered running. The key is to not over over reach myself. I decided that a 3.5 mile run was enough for a Monday.

Day 5: After the run yesterday and the way my knees were feeling in the early evening I really wasn't sure if I should or even if I could run for any length of time today. But after a good nights sleep and some brufen I was apparently all good to go. I decided that I would take Kai with me and use today as an easier recovery type run. Keeping the pace down would be the key today.

Day 4: Woke this morning and decided today was the day to try and test myself. How far and how long can I comfortably run for ? Its a dry and cold day so if I get out early enough I can get a reasonable run in. I wont have the dog with me today as the plan is to go that bit longer and to be honest I wasnt really sure what the final route would be.
It turned out to be a pretty good attempt at a trail half marathon and I'm happy that I managed through it pretty much unscathed. Just tired with enough of an ache in the legs to let me know that it was a good run.

Day 3: Wow the weather is going to be the challenge this month. Howling gales and sideways rain greeted me this morning. The question was do I run now or run later ? Thankfully that decision was taken out of my hands by Lynne as it was tidy living room time. Christmas is officially over so I had to get all the decorations back into the loft. Managed to get my run in before dinner.Took Kai my Springer spaniel with me on this run. Unfortunately he is not really trained for running on a leash and I'm not much of a trainer but hopefully we will both learn as the year moves forward.
I decided to pick up a nice flat route of about 5 miles along the canal from my house. The wind and rain were enough to make the route challenging but on the plus side I made it out today.

Day 2: Dragged myself out of bed to go to work. Arrived only to find that I didnt need to be in at all. Oh well I can stay for a chat and a wee run with my mate Fraser. 3.7 miles and 28 minutes later my first workplace run of the year is done and i'm heading home.

Day 1: Waited for the rain to stop. Pulled on my trail shoes and set out to forge a new run route. I was pleasantly surprised by the route I found. Mostly trail not that much road. 5.1 miles. However it looks like my headtorch has given up the ghost. I was carrying it though I didn't really need it. Back to the house for a nice NYD dinner with friends and family.
